KILAY is Life! [My Kilay story + Tips to achieve #KilayGoals]

TODAY’S WOMEN are crazily obsessed with their kilay (eyebrows) more than anything! Yes it sounds weird and hasty generalized, but it’s true. Gone are the days when women go out with their eyebrows unfixed; every single ladies are now trying their very best to achieve the so-called #KilayGoals. But why are we so devoted in perfecting those arches above our eyes? In this post, I’ll share my one-of-a-kind “Kilay Story” and everything about achieving your own eyebrow goals!

Why go gaga over beautiful eyebrows?

The answer is very simple. Our eyebrows define our look. One can go out with nothing on her face except for her properly groomed kilay, and still look pretty. On the other hand, I believe no one would look pretty with a perfectly painted face but messy eyebrows. That’s why “Kilay is Life” to us girls, funny, but true! It is the first thing that a lady should be able to learn in Basic Makeup before applying foundation and eyeshadow. Everything follows after achieving a perfect eyebrow makeup.

From Bald to Bold: Miss G’s kilay Story

Those who have known me since primary school up to college wouldn’t be so surprised with this story for sure, as well as the pictures that you’ll be seeing as you scroll down later. I’m not a hairy person, period. I believe I got that trait from my father, because he doesn’t have much hair on his armpits and legs as well. As for me, I don’t have hairs on my armpit (Thank God) and just a few on my legs and arms (but I still shave them…that’ll be a different story tho). And so, we can conclude that facial hairs would be less too---YES, that’s right. And so I dealt with bald eyebrows since birth, wasn’t an issue for me before, not until I started with my practice teaching.

THE DAYS when I really don't care about how I look! haha! College struggles definitely consumed me!

I was discussing a lesson when a student gave her nasty comment: “Ma’am, pansin ko lang, wala ka palang kilay! *giggles*” (Miss, I just noticed, you don’t have eyebrows!). Then everyone laughed. I didn’t care at all. In my mind, I was just telling myself that I shouldn’t take it seriously. I just let it pass and continued with my business. And so I graduated in college, still with bald eyebrows. Then came the day when I found myself shaping my arches with a brown eyebrow pencil I borrowed from Mama. I put on makeup that one sunny day because I have an interview as a high school teacher for a private school (which happened to be my first job for four years straight). From then on, I wear makeup, particularly eyebrow makeup.

The picture below was taken 4 to 5 years ago when I started trimming my messy eyebrow (which made it look more invisible haha!). Before, I thought keeping it thinly lined (my eyebrows) was okay...*face palm* But at least, several years after, I was able to pull it off! Hello to thicker and more defined eyebrows!

AFTER I DECIDED to trim my eyebrows, it looked thinner and less visible :(

I thought I’m doing it right before, but today as I look at the pictures, I can’t help but laugh!!! I looked horrible before! Yikes! That super thin lines above my eyes made me look like an extra-terrestrial being *face palm* I wonder why my students before don’t react about them…or I guess they were talking about me behind their backs! *suspicious look*. I honestly don’t know if it’s really a great idea bringing back these memories of ugliness! But I hope I’ll somehow inspire you to seek improvement, rather than laugh at them privately.

KILAY 101: Essential tools for
natural-looking eyebrows

There are tons of products out in the market that promises the best solution for your kilay problems. Some can be so expensive, while some are just below a hundred bucks. I’m no professional, but my experience will prove that I have something to say on this “kilay-thing”. First and foremost, the perfect tools are of great importance in slaying the goal. I will recommend the stuff that I’ve used for a long time already, because I believe they are very effective, especially for beginners. No-no to expensive products lovelies! But also, never settle for cheap and low-quality items which may do more harm than good.

In the beginning, I started with an eyebrow pencil from fashion 21, and then moved to a brow taupe from Clinique (which I borrowed from Mama). But then finally, through years of kilay drawing, I discovered these three items which already become part of my daily eyebrow makeup routine :) I bet your kilay obsession has brought you too far and you’re now confused with all the products in Sephora or BeautyMNL. I tell you, all you need to have are these three staple items.

[from left to right] Etude House Pink Bird eyebrow razor (78.00 php); Etude House Easy Brow pencil (128.00 php) and Fashion 21 Mini palette (199.00 php)

*For the eye shadow palette, I only use the fifth bar (creamy dark brown).
*Actually, you can survive with the razor and brow pencil only :) Very affordable yet awesomely effective!

SLAYING THE LOOK: How to achieve your #KilayGoals

Achieving your “kilay goals” will take a lot of patience and practice. At first attempt you may fail to meet your target, but after sometime, you’ll surely hit bull’s eye. What am I trying to imply? Simple, aside from having the right products, you must also have the skill to use them correctly. If you already have those thick and beautifully arched eyebrows, congratulations, you’re one of the blessed. Now all you need to do is to clean it up a bit and make it look more flawless and more defined. But as for those with bald (almost) eyebrows, it will be a great challenge to create a perfect set.

Well they say it’s easier to work on a thin rather than on a thick eyebrow, because you can totally draw the desired thickness and shape, but for me it’s a big no. The more hairs you have on your arches, the more natural it will look like with eyebrow makeup on. But of course for the ladies with the same case as mine, I’ll share the tricks here. And the secrets are: (1) Know how to draw the perfect arch and (2) Imitate the little hairs on it.

You must first know how to draw the perfect arch. And the most fool-proof technique in finding your perfect arch is by doing these steps using a blending brush. (1) Hold it against the side of your nose to determine where your brow begins; (2) Tilt it diagonally (still testing on the side of your nose) to determine the highest point your arch; and (3) Move the brush to the tip of your lips to determine where the brow should end.

Now you're ready to draw perfect eyebrows! Just follow these steps:

(1) Using an eyebrow razor, remove the unwanted hairs (those scattered under your arch). Never use tweezers for this because tugging can damage the skin.

(2) With an eyebrow pencil, draw lines using small strokes on your eyebrow, in order to imitate the tiny hairs. Never draw thick and continuous lines from the base to the tip of the eyebrow, that will look unnatural.

(3) Using the brush end of the eyebrow pencil, brush the hairs gently towards the tip of the eyebrow. Make sure to do this using small strokes as well.

(4) End this with a little brown eye shadow; concentrate on the middle part going to the tip to create dimension. I use creamy dark brown eye shadow always because it helps in making the makeup last longer.

AND YES! #KilayGoals achieved!

I believe this has been a long post, so thank you for keeping up with me until the end. It’s true that we should embrace what was given to us naturally (since birth), but it won’t hurt if you’ll try to improve on what you have---knowing that it’ll make you more confident to face the world. And in the end, my advice would be: “Just try to keep it as natural as possible”. Let it improve your look not sabotage your beauty.

'til my next beauty story,

DIY SERIES: Lemon Toner [Pimple scar remover + Whitening]

A RAINY DAY to everyone! *brrrr* It has been a week of continuous heavy rain though. I guess you're currently squeezing yourself into a fluffy pillow while rubbing your legs against your blanket. I can't blame you, the weather is really conducive for an entire day of slumber! But as for me, I squeezed another goodness here, which made me really excited to share it with everyone!

If you're blessed with a super clear face (with no visible blemishes at all), sorry, but this post is not for you. This is meant for those who suffer scars and blemishes caused by having pimples, just like me. You will not only solve your blemishes problems, but also your dream to have a whiter and more glowing skin. This DIY project is very simple, affordable and safe for any skin-type.

Let's have a LEMON-talk first

Lemon is a favorite flavor and scent for many products in the market. It is packed with a lot of vitamins and minerals that are good for our skin. It helps get rid of pimples because of its anti-bacterial property. And after, it can remove all the blemishes left because of its citric acid content, which will soon lead to a clearer and whiter skin. However, you must be careful if you have cuts or wounds on your face because it can sting really bad.

How to make your own LEMON Toner

Now I'll share with you how to make a natural toner from freshly-squeezed lemon juice. All you need to have are the three items below:

STEP 1: Get a small, clean bowl. Pour 1 tablespoon of cold water in it and add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. (We shall follow the ratio of 1:1 for the water and lemon juice. The concentrated extract will be too strong to be used directly on our delicate face.)

STEP 2: Just mix the water and juice together. (You may refrigerate it for a bit because it is better cold, it'll help in reducing pores.)

STEP 3: Get a clean cotton square (or any kind, as long as it's clean) and soak it with the water-lemon mixture. Apply it on your entire face (avoiding the areas near the eyes and lips), concentrating on problem areas.

IMPORTANT: Just leave it on your face for 5-10 minutes only, then rinse it off. Pat your face dry and apply moisturizer. DON'T expose yourself to the sun while you have it on.

You can make more of it and just store in a clean container or bottle for future use. I personally use it once to twice a week, but I would advice that you use it once a day until you get your desired result. But, it'll be better if you'll continue using it once in a while after your skin have improved, because it is effective in preventing zits (pimples) from reappearing again.

I know purchasing a lemon often can be somehow be unpractical for some, but it is the cheapest among the other options. Besides, you can use a piece of lemon for more than a week, which is far more economical than buying products which may contain harmful chemicals and may fail to provide you the ideal result.

I hope you'll try it as well and please let me know your insights about it. It is all-natural that's why I can guarantee that it's safe. However, our varying skin-types may have also varying reactions on it. Those with oily skin will benefit from its acidity because it'll help put the shine at bay. But for those with dry skin, you should be cautious in using too much or a more concentrated version, because it can dry up the skin more. Just follow the recommended dilution and you're good to go :)

Share your thoughts! I'll be happy to here them ^_^

The lemon lover, as always,

WOFEX 2016

THE LARGEST FOOD FEST in the Philippines is back! Four days (August 3-6, 2016) of ultimate food show experience is the promise of the World Food Expo or WOFEX 2016. This is currently happening inside two big venues, WOFEX TRADE at the World Trade Center and the WOFEX MARKETPLACE at the SMX Convention Center.

Since college, I've been consistent in attending F&B Trade shows, like the MAFBEX (Manila Food and Beverage Expo). But this year will be different for me because I had to attend the expo alone---but I had so much fun and learned a lot as well! Now let me share to you my experience. Happy reading!

Inasmuch as I wanted to be present on Day 1, I had a commitment at St. Luke's Global, so I decided to attend on Day 2 instead. I arrived at around 11:30 am at the WOFEX Marketplace (SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia) and there was already a large number of participants outside waiting to be registered.

The entrance fee is 200 php, then you'll be given a stub and registration form to fill out. After accomplishing the form, you should fall in line and get registered for you to receive your name tag.

Just stick the tag on the right side of your chest and you're now ready to enter the hall! WEEEEH!!

Actually, I got so overwhelmed inside, there are so many people and so many food to try! Yay! Almost all the stalls offer a "free taste" on their products. So to make my entrance fee "sulit", I tried everything :)

The first item that I've tasted FOR FREE!

A cup of tea, anyone? "Sosyal" brewed tea at Twinings!

Took a shot and I was like ...*cried* water please!

I hope I can take home all of these seasonings -_-

Fruit tarts are the best!

I tasted all kinds of cheese available here!

Of course you cannot just have everything for free! Remember, these companies joined the expo to promote their products and somehow influence the visitors to use these items on their own food businesses. But don't worry, all the products here are discounted, so get ready to hoard!

Below are the stalls that offer very affordable products! I love the biscuits and cookies at Julie's (A Malaysian brand) and the great offer of Super Q for their bihon and canton noodles, plus free pansit! yumyum!

Aside from the free food and discounted items, you can also watch a LIVE cooking battle. I was so amazed on how skillful the participants are! Oh wait, It's the Philippine Culinary Cup! That explains why :)

And because I also want to learn new recipes from celebrity chefs, I allotted two hours in the Kitchen Theater. My tip: Try to be seated in front so you can get more chance to taste the food prepared by the chefs and win gift packs from sponsors once you answered their questions correctly. And as expected, I left the place with a full tummy :)

Although I'm alone in this food tripping, I'm so happy because I got explore the entire hall at my own pace. In addition to that, I met this cute mascot who was so "kilig" when I asked him for a selfie :)

I left the World Food Expo happy and contented. Though I had a hard time carrying all my purchases, I'm so glad because my family enjoyed trying all of them :)

So now, are you also interested to visit this expo? Here are some of my tips before you do that:

1. WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES. I know you want to look fashionable but I would suggest that you consider comfort first. Because since you'll be walking a lot, as you get through areas where there's a lot of people, a shirt-short combo or a light dress will save you from sweat. Plus, wear flat shoes also to avoid leg sprain.

2. BRING YOUR OWN ECO BAG. Though some of the stall will give you free eco bags, it's better to have your own. Just make sure it'll be large enough if you're really planning to make a lot of purchases.

3. KNOW THE SCHEDULE and ARRIVE EARLY. You must know what is in store for you on the day that you'll attend the expo. You can maximize your time if you'll arrive early---taste fresh samples and catch the first show at the Kitchen Theater.

4. ASK A FRIEND TO COME WITH YOU. Yes, I think you should go with a friend, that'll be more fun!

I hope you enjoyed this post :) I really do hope you'll take advantage of the chance to experience their final wave tomorrow, August 6 (Saturday), at the SMX Convention Center and World Trade Center. Feed your mind with the new trends in Food & Beverage industry and satisfy your tummy with good food!

See you at the next food expo!

DIY SERIES: Oatmeal + Honey Face Mask [Perfect Acne Treatment]

HAVE YOU TRIED EVERYTHING, but it seems like your pimples and acnes are there to stay forever? It has been a long-time dilemma for me: pimples and cystic acne that keeps on popping-out whenever my period is about to set in. I’m tired of using special products each time I have them on my face and disgusted of the fact that I have to face them first thing in the morning! I hate having pimples and I’m extremely devastated with the marks they leave behind.

I’ve tried strong salicylic acid products and underwent clarifying facial procedures, and yes, these somehow reduced my zits but the problem is still there. Until I’ve finally decided to try a not-so-new but proven effective (according to some online articles) natural remedy, and the result was really amazing.

I know you have heard of this combination already, but the reason why I’m sharing you this is because I want to teach you on how to create this mask by observing the advisable proportion of ingredients and the must-not-be-forgotten steps before and after application. Let’s get started!

Benefits of Oatmeal and Honey

Oatmeal is one of the most-suited ingredients for all skin-types. It can act as a mild cleanser (because it contains saponins); provide enough hydration or moisture (rich in lipids and proteins); calms eczema, reduce itchiness and treats acne (due to its anti-inflammatory properties) and delays skin aging (primarily because of anti-oxidants). No wonder this ingredient has become a part of many skincare products already.

Honey, on the other hand, has natural anti-bacterial properties that can target pimples and acnes. It can also lighten pimple marks and improve skin tone. And since this ingredient is also packed with anti-oxidants, it can help in preventing the early signs of aging.

Yes, everything that is stated above is TRUE! Amazing huh? :)

Make you own Oatmeal + Honey Face Mask!

Alright, so now we’ll proceed to the step-by-step procedure of making your own pimple fighting and scar healing mask. Make sure to wash your face first before applying this mask.

STEP 1: In a small container, place a tablespoonful of oatmeal (you can add more if you want, but it’s better to prepare a single-use mask, fresh every time!)

STEP 2: Add a teaspoon of warm water (enough to moisten the oatmeal and cook it a bit---though raw oats can serve as an exfoliant, it can irritate the pimples) and mix it until soft and smooth.

STEP 3: Add a tablespoonful of honey. Mix thoroughly and refrigerate for a few minutes (the cold mask will feel good on the skin and aids in closing pores).

STEP 4: Apply the mask on your face using a clean foundation brush or your own fingers. Let it stand for 5 – 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with clean water. Pat your face dry with a clean towel and apply moisturizer right away!

Excuse my BARE FACE! :)

FEEL YOUR FACE! I really love the smooth feeling after indulging on this all-natural face mask. Whenever I have those breakouts, I use it twice a day. And I swear, after two days, you’ll notice that your zits will start to disappear and heal for good! Now, to prevent breakouts, I make sure to treat myself with this mask every other day. You can try it now and see the wonders it can do for your skin. And besides, the ingredients are very affordable and far more effective than the commercially sold masks in beauty shops. The only cons of using the Oatmeal + Honey Face Mask are the messy application and its shelf-life, but it’s definitely tolerable!

Try my wonder mask TODAY and look even more beautiful TOMORROW! *wink*

GIRL TALK: When to Let Go of a Friend?

ASIDE FROM THE MISERIES our love life costs us, it is also our friends who usually give us heartbreaks. Sometimes, when a friend breaks our heart, it’s far more painful than actually breaking up with our boyfriend (or even after knowing that our crush will never like us).

Our friends occupy a large space in our life. Actually, we spend most of our time with them than with our families (though this doesn’t apply to all). Why? Because they seem to understand us better, and they never fail to support our endeavors, whatever our pursuit may be. We are loved, trusted, cheered, comforted and even tolerated by our friends---that’s why we value them so much. Even the most introvert person can still have someone whom he or she considers as his or her friend.

But what if things started to change?

Just like any other relationship, a friendship is also bound to face struggles. It is normal to have disagreements and argue with a friend. Even though you agree on almost everything, there’ll come a time that you will disagree on a single thought or matter. When this happens, it is acceptable to give each other enough space to calm your thoughts and recognize your individualities. These disputes will soon be settled after a truthful dialogue and will lead to a better and stronger relationship.

But what if you can’t settle your differences anymore?

Change is the only permanent thing in this world, and your friend can change too. You’ll soon have these arguments that last longer than before; things will start to become unbearable. You’ll wake up one day exhausted with all the fights, starting to feel an unusual emotion towards your friend---hate. With this unwanted but irresistible feeling, you will quickly forget all the good memories that you had with your friend, and those will be replaced with bitterness.

But you have a choice:
To stay and save the friendship or let go and leave.

Of course you should try to save the friendship, do everything to resolve your issues, even if you have to swallow your pride and step on your ego. Why do these things? Simple, because you love your friend and you value your friendship. However, this may not be possible in all situations. Sometimes, after doing the best that you can, your friend won’t reciprocate. Worst scenario would be your friend causing you more harm than good. In such times, I think the best thing you can do is to let go and leave your friend.

Don’t be too hard on yourself; never blame yourself because it’s over. If your friend is really “your friend” he or she will exert some efforts too (well he or she should). Friendship is a two-way thing. Although in some situations, one exerts more effort than the other, but it should not be you all the time. Now if you’re noticing that your friend is not helping you become a better person, and he or she only wears the tag “I’m your friend” at times when he or she badly needs you, then it’s time to let go and leave your friend---move on. Maybe that friend of yours is not really a friend at all, but a mere acquaintance.

Remember, you don’t need people who will push you down; you don’t need a person who will let you deal alone with a problem; you don’t need somebody who will always take but will never ever give anything in return---You don’t deserve a friend who acts like a stranger but feeds on you like a parasite.

We are destined to meet different people in our lives, but not all of them are destined to stay. Maybe you just met that friend for a reason, but it doesn’t mean that he or she is meant to stay with you for a long time. Keep the good memories that you’ve shared as friends, but when you feel that things aren’t right anymore, listen to your heart and pray---maybe it’s already time to leave your friend behind and move forward.

But in the end, let us not forget that it is best to save a friendship than part ways as strangers. Let God heal the wounds and try your best to be a better friend than yesterday. Think hard and Pray hard before making any decisions :)

Will always be your lovely friend,
